Thank you from the bottom of my heart for publishing this on the nation’s most credible physician social media site! This is more than an essay or public health declaration…it is an expression of concern from the depths of my soul. I have been involved in the shipyard remediation and it’s public health impacts since February 19, 1992 when I found my father dead and signed his death certificate as a physician specialist with the San Francisco Department of Public Health. His contributing cause of premature death was pulmonary asbestosis. He was forced into early retirement as a career longshoreman and walking boss at the shipyard. I have attended numerous city government meetings and witnessed testimony by residents of the neighborhood I grew up in with unexplained cancers and an excess burden of cardiopulmonary diseases clearly factored by exposure to particle pollution. I hope readers will draw from this how important it is to maintain physician integrity in all professional callings first and foremost!
